Today I baked chocolate chip cookies after school with my friend Kyu-san and one of my students, Yuta. We made them in the school's Home Ec room, following the standard recipe on the bag. More fun than making the cookies was watching their reaction to the most mundane things. Kyu-san was astonished by the amount of butter and sugar that went into it. There was no brown sugar to be had in Kozu (I raised a minor uproar at the Kozu Store, but that's another story for another time). I wish I had a picture of Yuta and Kyu-san staring into the oven together. They were amazed as the dough flattened down into a cookie shape.
Later in the evening, as I was wandering around the village with a tallboy in hand, I ran into Yuta's mother (oops!). She gushed about how tasty the cookies were, so I guess that forgives my sin of being the boozer English teacher.
Another example of cultural exchange! (the cookies, not me drinking...)
